According to a Chennai Corporation official, the survey is a part of a plan to expand the cycle-sharing in Chennai. “Recently, the Central government has instructed several city corporations to study the possibility of non-motorised transportation as an alternative to the public transportation in the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic,” the official said.
The official added that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is conducting a competition (Cycles4Change Challenge) among the smart cities to promote cycling. As per the competition, the participating smart cities should devise and implement a pilot project to improve the cycling culture. The ministry would provide Rs 1 crore to each of eight cities whose pilot projects win the competition.
“Before devising a project, we want to know what the city residents are thinking about the cycle-sharing project. The pilot project will be implemented based on the survey result,” he said.
The online survey form is available on the Chennai Smart City website. The survey form asks the residents about the issues that hinder them from using cycles to work and other purposes. “We also request you to fill this survey for a family member, neighbour, household worker, or any other person who might not have access to a smartphone or internet,” says the civic body.
