Passengers say that most of the MTC buses are unfit to be operated. Water seeps through the ceiling even if there is a light drizzle. “Still worse, water stagnates on the floor of the bus, and we cannot even stand and complete our journey,” said Kumaraguru, a regular commuter.
The commuters also lamented that while bus fares had been raised, the vehicles were badly maintained. “The officials should realise that the number of MTC bus passengers is steadily on the rise and maintenance of buses should be properly undertaken on time to ensure the passenger’s journey is pleasant,” said A Rajaram, a citybased civic activist. He added that the officials concerned should ask for opinion from MTC drivers and conductors on the condition of the vehicles during the rainy season and passengers should not be made to suffer at any cost.
“I am a regular user of MTC buses. During rainy days I cannot even sit in the bus even if seats are vacant as rain water leaks through the window. Once all the passengers sitting on one side of a bus had to vacant their seats because of water seepage,” said A Ramamoorthy, a private firm employee in Vadapalani. The bus crew should bring such complaints to the notice of higher officials who in turn should take necessary steps. When contacted, a senior officer (in charge of operations), said that they were receiving many such complaints. “We will inspect all the buses soon and take up repair work,” the official assured. They would soon conduct a study on this problem.
