On Monday night, neighbours noticed smoke emanating from their house and broke open the door. They were shocked to see Manoharan charred to death. They rushed to the spot and doused the fire during which they found Jeeva lying unconscious in the other room. However, doctor at 108 ambulance declared her dead due to poisoning. Their bodies were sent to Kilpauk Medical College for post-mortem. SRMC police registered a case and during their search in the house, an envelope with two cheques for Rs 2 lakh each were found. A note found along with the cheques said that the money could be used for their cremation. They had also requested to inform
their relatives of their demise with the contact numbers.
After preliminary inquiry, police said that the couple’s son Saravanan was jobless and became addicted to liquor after getting married to a widow against his parents’ wishes. Meanwhile, their daughter, a school headmaster, was divorced twice.
“She was also with an ashram for a while. So, the couple was embarrassed over such incidents,” said an official. Saravanan, who had gone to Palani on a pilgrimage, was informed of the incident and he returned to Chennai. Police have registered a case and further inquiry is on.
