It was free-for-all at the accident site as hundreds of people gathered and started collecting the tomatoes, which were scattered on the road. The lorry loaded with tomatoes was heading to the vegetable market in Chengalpattu from Andhra Pradesh.
While passing Palur at around 5 am, cattle suddenly jumped in front of the vehicle and the driver lost control while trying to apply the brakes. The sudden attempt to stop the vehicle resulted in the lorry overturning with tomatoes strewn all over. The news of the accident spread to villagers rapidly and soon hundreds of them gathered at the spot with baskets and bags to pick up the tomatoes. The lorry driver and cleaner tried to keep them at bay but all their efforts went in vain.
On information, the Palur police who arrived at the spot controlled the crowd and the vegetable vendors from the Chengalpattu market came to the spot and picked up the tomatoes.
Police sources said over three tonnes of tomatoes got damaged in the accident. After nearly two hours, the lorry was moved from the spot and traffic restored. Palur police have registered a case.
