District details
Karur district was first formed in 1995 by trifurcating Tiruchy district with Perambalur being the third district. The district is now surrounded by Namakkal in the north, Dindigul in the south, Tiruchy in the east and Erode in the west.
It is an industrial hub with a number of paper mills, cement factories, textile and sugar mills and bus body building units. The Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd., better known as TNPL, the country’s largest non-wood based paper-maker was established in the early 80s at Pugalur near Karur. Cauvery and Amaravathy are the major rivers that flow through the district. The fourth least populated district in the state, Karur has 10,64,493 and 20.85 per cent of the total population belong to SC and ST.
Out of 335 NOTA votes polled in 2011 here, Karur constituency witnessed 173 (maximum) and Kulithalai 45 (minimum). Among the 56 contestants in the fray from here during 2011 election in the district, there were only two women candidates — one each in Karur and Krishnarayapuram (SC) segments. Out of four constituencies in the district, three were won by AIADMK and one by DMK.

Both AIADMK and DMK have won from here four times. Sadasivam of Indian National Congress was a three-time MLA of this constituency in 1957, 1962 and 1977. Consisting of 18 per cent Muslim population, the seat had seen four MLAs from the religion. Winning parties: DMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989) and ADK (1984).

Winner: Senthil Balaji V (AIADMK)
Runner-up: Jothi Mani S (INC)
Margin: 44,145 votes
TM Nallaswamy of INC consecutively won three times from here since 1957. Senthil Balaji, M Chinnasamy and K Vadivel of AIADMK have won here twice in elections earlier. Vasuki Murugesan of DMK contested here four times in a row from 1991 and managed to win just once in 1996. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), AIADMK (2006), INC (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989) and ADK (1984).
136. Krishnarayapuram (SC)
Total No of voters: 1,74,944
Votes polled: 1,51,699
Polling percentage: 86.75%
Winner: Kamaraj S (AIADMK)
Runner-up: Kamaraj P (DMK)
Margin: 22,509 votes
A Arivalagan of ADK and PM Thangavelraj were two-time MLAs from here. In a rare feat, A Arivalagan had secured 76.04 per cent votes in the 1991 election. P Soundarapandian was a three-time consecutive winner of the constituency from 1967 to 1977. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), ADK (1989) and INC (1984).
137. Kulithalai
Total No of voters: 1,79,805
Votes polled: 1,59,662
Polling percentage: 88.93%
Winner: Pappasundaram A (AIADMK)
Runner-up: Manickam R (DMK)
Margin: 22,473 votes
DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s first win was recorded here in 1957 as an Independent. M Kandasamy of DMK won here twice consecutively in 1967 and 1971. A Pappa Sundaram of ADK was a four-time MLA of this constituency in 1989, 1991, 2001 and 2011. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991, 1989 and 1984).
