District details

Chennai is the Detroit of India with a number of automobile manufacturing units. Though Madras was renamed as Chennai in 1996, a few traditional institutions such as University of Madras, IIT Madras, Madras Institute of Technology, Madras High Court, Madras Cricket Club and Madras Medical College have kept the old name in people’s memory alive. Chennai is also one of the 20 proposed smart cities in the country.

16. Egmore (SC)

Total No of voters: 1,64,768

Votes Polled: 1,11,996

Polling percentage: 68.06%

Winner: Nallathambi K (DMDK)

Runner-up: Parithi Ellamvazhuthi (DMK)

Margin:  202 votes

Out of 178 polling stations here, 64 were declared critical in 2011. A DMK fort for many elections, AIADMK alliance partner DMDK won it in 2011 with a margin of mere 202 votes. Out of 10 elections from 1971, DMK candidates have won 8 times here. Parithi Ellamvazhuthi of DMK had consecutively won 5 times in the constituency from 1989 to 2006.

17. Royapuram

Total No of voters: 1,59,349

Votes Polled: 1,12,461

Polling percentage: 70.67% 

Winner: Jayakumar. D (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Manohar. R (INC)

Margin:  21,372  votes

Out of 166 Polling stations, 56 were declared. Critical Booths by EC in 2011 elections. Considered as ADMK’s fort as consecutive win in the constituency recorded. AIADMK’s D Jayakumar is a 4 time MLA of the constituency. (1991, 2001, 2006 and 2011).

18. Harbour

Total No of voters: 1,52,817

Votes Polled: 96,475

Polling percentage: 63.61% 

Winner: Pazha Karuppiah (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Altaf Hussain (DMK)

Margin:  20,317  votes

Out of 157 polling stations here, more than half booths (96) were declared critical in 2011. A DMK fort for many elections was lost to AIADMK’s Pazha Karuppiah in 2011 election. DMK chief Karunanidhi was a two-time MLA of this constituency and K Anbazhagan won thrice from here.

19. Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni

Total No of voters: 1,87,305

Votes Polled: 1,29,836

Polling percentage: 69.41%

Winner: Anbazhagan J (DMK)

Runner-up: Thameemun Ansari M (MMK)

Margin:  9,203 votes

Out of 184 polling stations here, 81 were declared critical in 2011 elections. A DMK fort as it had never lost the election in constituency from 1977, except 1991 to INC. DMK chief Karunanidhi has been elected as MLA of the constituency in 1996, 2001 and 2006.

20. Thousand Lights 

Total No of voters: 2,00,020

Votes Polled: 1,33,567

Polling percentage: 69.41%

Winner: Valarmathi B (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Hasan Mohamed Jinnah (DMK)

Margin:  7,592 votes

AIADMK’s Valarmathi got 50.55% votes here in 2011. Out of 203 polling stations, 97 were declared critical in 2011 election. DMK treasurer M K Stalin is a fourtime MLA of the constituency with three consecutive wins in 1996, 2001 and 2006. AIADMK’s K A Krishnaswamy is a threetime MLA of the constituency.
