District details

Erode was known as Periyar district till 1996. The district was the largest by area until Tiruppur district was carved out in 2009. Out of eight constituencies in the district, one Bhavanisagar is a reserved for SC. Among 106 total contestants in the 2011 Assembly election, 99 were males and 7 females. Erode district witnessed 1,287 votes for 49 (O) — maximum in Erode West constituency (235) and minimum in Bhavanisagar (74). All the constituencies in district were swept by AIADMK front in 2011.

98. Erode (East) 

Total No of voters: 1,75,395 

Votes polled: 1,36,071

Polling percentage: 77.64% 

Winner: Chandhirakumar VC (DMDK)

Runner-up: Muthusamy S (DMK)

Margin: 10,644 votes

Erode East constituency was formed in 2008 after the single Erode constituency was split into two — Erode East and Erode West. The winning party of the Erode constituency had been forming government since 1977 to 2006. Winning party: DMDK (2011).

99. Erode (West)

Total No of voters: 1,93,170 

Votes polled: 1,53,133

Polling percentage: 79.30%

Winner: Ramalingam KV (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Yuvaraja M (INC)

Margin: 37,868 votes

Reorganised in 2008, Erode West constituency covers the western part of Erode corporation. The constituency will experience VVPAT facility in voting machines during the 2016 election. Winning party: AIADMK (2011).

100. Modakkurichi 

Total No of voters: 1,87,832 

Votes polled: 1,53,092

Polling percentage: 81.53%

Winner: Kittusamy RN (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Palanisami RM (INC) 

Margin: 40,162 votes

During the 1996 election, 1,033 farmers contested here as Independents to protest against the Dravidian governments. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), INC (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991), DMK (1989) and ADK (1984).

103. Perundurai 

Total No of voters: 1,78,269

Votes polled: 1,49,561

Polling percentage: 83.98% 

Winner: Venkatachalam ND (AIADMK)

Runner-up: KKC Balu (KNMK)

Margin: 42,167 votes

The constituency has seen 7 AIADMK and 3 CPI MLAs in the last 10 elections. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), AIADMK (2006), ADMK (2001), CPI (1996), ADK (1991, 1989 and 1984).

104. Bhavani 

Total No of voters: 1,96,163 

Votes polled: 1,60,496

Polling percentage: 81.82% 

Winner: Narayanan PG (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Mahendran KS (PMK) 

Margin: 28,041 votes

Parts of the Tiruppur Parliamentary constituency and some parts of Erode forms Bhavani constituency. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), PMK (2006), ADMK (2001), TMC (1996), ADK (1991) and IND (1989).

105. Anthiyur 

Total No of voters: 1,73,681 

Votes polled: 1,42,922

Polling percentage: 82.34%

Winner: Ramanitharan SS (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Raaja NKKP (DMK) 

Margin: 25,254 votes

AIADMK won here consecutively for 5 times from 1977 to 1991 elections. The constituency was part of Gobichettipalayam PC. before the delimitation. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), DMK (2006), PMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991, 1989 and 1984).

106. Gobichettipalayam 

Total No of voters: 2,09,023 

Votes polled: 1,74,184

Polling percentage: 83.45% 

Winner: Sengottaiyan KA (AIADMK)

Runner-up: Sivaraj NS (KNMK)

Margin: 41,912 votes

AIADMK is a dominant party here. KA Sengottayan of AIADMK is a 6-time legislator from here. Winning parties: AIADMK (2011), AIADMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991, 1989 and 1984).

107. Bhavanisagar (SC) 

Total No of voters: 1,99,502

Votes polled: 1,63,511

Polling percentage: 82.03% 

Winner: Sundaram PL (CPI)

Runner-up: Logeswari R (DMK)

Margin: 19,403 votes

VK Chinnasamy of AIAMDK was a four-time MLA from here. It was a general constituency earlier and became a reserved constituency for SC from 2011. Winning parties: CPI (2011), DMK (2006), ADMK (2001), DMK (1996), ADK (1991, 1989 and 1984).
