CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has appointed Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) A Amalraj as the new Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, replacing Abhin Dinesh Modak.

Modak, who took charge before the recent Assembly elections, will now head the Crime Branch-CID (CB-CID), taking over from TS Anbu. Notably, both Amalraj and Modak are former commissioners of the Tambaram City Police.

A native of Kanniyakumari district, Amalraj joined the Indian Police Service in 1996. He holds postgraduate degrees in science and management, as well as a PhD. During his career, he has served as Police Commissioner in Tambaram, Coimbatore, and Tiruchi, and held senior positions including IG of the Central and West Zones, Additional Commissioner (Headquarters) for Chennai city, ADGP Operations, Director of the Tamil Nadu Police Academy, and Head of the Enforcement Bureau CID.

After joining the service, he went on to earn an MBA in Human Resource Management and a Doctorate in Management from Madurai Kamaraj University, further strengthening his expertise in the field.

Amalraj is widely recognised for his commitment to integrating modern management techniques into policing, with a strong emphasis on team building and fostering effective working relationships across employees, partner agencies, and the public. He is also deeply interested in harnessing scientific innovations to enhance police operations.

He has also published five books on motivation.
