CHENNAI: The Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC) in Chennai Stephen SC Hsu visited Mercy Home in the city to learn about its work supporting vulnerable communities and strengthening people-to-people ties between Taiwan and South India.

Founded in 1957, Mercy Home currently cares for around 100 residents, including 65 women and 35 men.

The institution supports people facing abandonment, illness, disability and social hardship. Its services include shelter, healthcare, counselling, rehabilitation, vocational activities and community-based support, with a focus on providing residents dignity, security and a sense of belonging.

During the visit, Hsu interacted with the nuns, staff and volunteers and discussed elderly care, social welfare and community support. He appreciated their sustained efforts in caring for vulnerable sections of society and made a donation towards the Home’s activities.

The TECC said that the visit was part of Taiwan’s broader commitment to human-centred engagement and highlighted opportunities for exchanges on ageing, community care and social welfare. It said such community-level engagements could strengthen mutual understanding between Taiwan and India through shared values of compassion, dignity and social responsibility.
