Talking to DT Next on the sidelines of the Plastic Surgeons Day celebrations at the hospital, Dr K Kuberan, Professor and Head of Department, General Surgery, Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital, said that it was an important facility for any medical college and hospital.
“The number of burns cases of different kinds have also increased in the recent times. At the moment, the facility at Kilpauk sees a major segment of patients from across Tamil Nadu. Therefore, a burns ward will be of immense benefit to the public,” he said. This year, the institute, which is a renowned centre for plastic surgery and rehabilitation of hand, marked the day with a public awareness programme on safety, prevention and treatment of burns. Dr V Ramadevi, head of department and professor, plastic surgery, says that close to 30 per cent of the procedures carried out by the department are for contracture or the tightening of the skin after a second or third degree burn.
“This is often due to a delay in treatment of the burns as these patients come from remote areas of the state. Complete recovery in such cases depend on the extent of damage to the tendons and nerves. If it is only the skin, the chances of complete recovery is very high,” she explained. There are an estimated two million cases of burn injuries of varying kinds in India every year.
