After SSI R Manimaran developed breathing difficulty on June 11, his family members rushed him to a private hospital in Chromepet. His COVID test results on June 14 confirmed that he had contracted the virus. Since then, he was undergoing treatment. On Monday, his condition worsened and he was put under observation in ICU, but he died without responding to treatment on Wednesday morning.
A resident of Choolaimedu, Manimaran is survived by his wife Nirmala and son Rajesh.
On Wednesday evening, DGP JK Tripathy and former city Commissioner AK Vishwanathan, Additional commissioner (South zone) Prem Anand Sinha; and joint Commissioner (East) R Sudhakar paid tributes to SSI Manimaran at the Foreshore Estate police station.
Manimaran is the second police official to die due to the infection after inspector S Balamurali of Mambalam station who succumbed on June 17.
So far, 1,065 police personnel in the city police alone have tested positive for the virus. Of them, 410 have recovered and rejoined duty.
Meanwhile, Triplicane Deputy Commissioner Dharmaraj welcomed sub-inspector Kannarasu and special sub-inspector Krishnakumar of Zam Bazaar police station, who reported back to duty after recovering from the infection.
