Madurai
Out of 10 seats in Madurai district, AIADMK romped home in eight. AIADMK lost two constituencies in the entire district. They were Madurai East and Madurai Central constituencies. AIADMK swept Theni district where they won all four constituencies.
One reason for AIADMK’s victory in the southern districts was the party’s manifesto. Mariselvi, a jubilant cadre from Madurai, was confident that Jayalalithaa would implement all electoral promises.
However, AIADMK had lost some ground in the southern districts. Out of total 58 constituencies, AIADMK secured 47 seats in the 2011 outing whereas in 2016, it secured only 31 seats.
The bulk of seats were lost in Tirunelveli district where in 2011 AIADMK had secured 9 out 10 losing only the Palayamkottai constituency. But now in 2016, AIADMK could grab only four seats.
Similarly, in Madurai district, AIADMK had won in all 10 constituencies in 2011 whereas in 2016, it lost two seats to DMK. AIADMK also lost three seats in Kanniyakumari district where DMK-Congress alliance had grabbed all six seats in the district. BJP which was expected to give a big fight in Kanniyakumari district drew a blank.
