CHENNAI: Flight operations at Chennai airport were disrupted on Friday (Dec 19) after seven flights to and from destinations such as Delhi and Varanasi were cancelled due to dense fog and adverse weather conditions prevailing across several northern States, causing severe inconvenience to passengers.
Of the cancelled services, four were outbound flights from Chennai, including Air India and IndiGo services scheduled to operate to Delhi and Varanasi. Three inbound flights from Delhi to Chennai, operated by Air India and IndiGo, were also cancelled.
The cancelled departures included an Air India flight scheduled to leave for Delhi at 9.50 am, an IndiGo flight at 10.45 am, another Air India flight at 11 am, and an IndiGo flight scheduled to depart for Varanasi at 5.20 pm. The inbound cancellations included an Air India flight scheduled to arrive at 8.55 am, an IndiGo flight at 9.50 am, and another Air India flight at 10.20 am from Delhi.
In addition, seven flights operating from Chennai to destinations including Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Mumbai were delayed by one to two hours.
Dense fog and extreme cold conditions have been affecting northern States, including Delhi, for over a week now, leading to widespread disruption of flight services across the country. Airport officials said the delays and cancellations were due to poor visibility in the north and advised passengers to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates before travelling.
