After a DNA test established that the baby girl, who was kept in a home in Madurai was their child, the baby has been reunited with her parents. A petition will be filed soon, in order to take action against those involved in trafficking. After delivery in September last year, the parents Sakthivel and were told that the baby was dead, after she was kept in the incubator for a few days at a private hospital.
However, they were alerted later by a nurse, who informed them that the Dr Ramaneeswari, who was overseeing the delivery, had sold the newborn to a wealthy couple. After repeated enquiries by the couple, a complaint was filed against the couple by a party representing the doctor, alleging that Sakthivel and Kavitha had sold the baby willingly and were now demanding more money. Though a few months old baby was later handed over to them by the doctor, saying that it was theirs, the couple had sought a DNA test and had filed a police complaint.
This week, a DNA test had revealed that the baby was the couple’s and was reunited with their parents. Sakthivel is a relieved man, but he can’t forget the trauma his family had undergone in the past few months. “My wife was under severe depression. Now, we are very happy our girl is with us. It will help her recover soon. I want the guilty to be punished,” he said controlling his tears.
A social worker assisting the couple in the case said, “In all these months, we received no help from the police. We approached the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court to speed up the formalities of DNA test. Now, we are happy that justice has prevailed. But we need action to be taken against the parties involved.” He added that none of them had made a court appearance and a new petition will be filed on Monday at the Madurai Bench to seek action against those involved. He said, “ We had filed a habeas corpus and the court could only retrieve the baby. The police haven’t helped us at all and have sided with the accused since the beginning.”
