Speaking after inaugurating a slew of projects, including the green rail corridor comprising the 114-km Rameswaram-Manamadurai stretch, he said with the provision of bio-toilets in all the coaches, discharge of human waste from trains on to the track would be completely eliminated, which in turn would help in improving cleanliness and hygiene, besides preventing corrosion of tracks.
“The Railway Ministry has already provided 40,750 bio-toilets in its coaches till June this year and it is planned to equip more coaches with 30,000 bio-toilets in the current fiscal,” he added. Accordingly, ten passenger trains consisting of 286 coaches moving in this section have been provided with bio-toilets enabling the rail corridor free from discharge of human waste on the track.
The Rameswaram-Manamadurai stretch was identified to convert it into green train corridor as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Suresh Prabhu, who also inaugurated the high-speed WiFi services at Chennai Central Station, also inaugurated the genetic medical service facilities under Ayush scheme at Perambur Railway Hospital.
Apart from this, the minister inaugurated the newly laid fourth broad gauge line between Tiruvallur and Tiruvalangadu stations on the Chennai-Arakkonam section.
