‘Bhadra’ the name given to the dog who miraculously survived the fall after two medical students threw her from a building, is no less than a national hero. A few days ago a gut-wrenching video surfaced online showing a person grinning away while throwing a terrified Bhadra off the terrace of a three-storey building in Chennai.

The video of the heinous act went viral and the culprits, two final year medical students were nabbed on Tuesday. They have been released on bail now. For the last few days, Bhadra’s story was closely tracked by both local and national media.  However, there were many who were concerned about Bhadra’s health as she was constantly in front of the camera and shuttling between TV studios. It caused much stress to the injured dog.

Shravan Krishnan, one of the rescuers says, “Since she was injured a while back, some part of her wounds have healed But she needs more time to recover. Also, she has been given the best medical treatment and she has now started responding well to humans around her.” He says that it was a conscious decision to bring the incident to limelight nationally so that there is more awareness about the issue. “We only took her to studios of two major national news channel.

And for others, we requested the media to come to my house and didn’t move her from my place at all. We wanted more people to know about her story for the larger good. People should think twice before harming an animal,” he says, adding that they have stopped all media interactions now and Bhadra is at his place, where she is recuperating.

Dr R. Jayaprakash, Directorate of Clinics, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University says, “The five-month old puppy can walk on her three legs. The fact that she is still a puppy worked in her favour. Otherwise a compression fracture in the spine can cause paralysis. In Bhadra’s case, the fracture has not damaged the spinal column.

However, she needs to rest now till she is completely healed.” Bhadra’s is a story of survival and the rescuers wanted to set an example. “Through the incident, we want to convey that one doesn’t have to depend on NGOs to help a four-legged. Individuals can take action against the culprit by themselves. This incident has established this quite well,” says Antony Rubin, Honorary Animal Welfare Officer and a rescuer.

Finding a home for Bhadra in the city

Bhadra is an overnight star and there are many from the city who have come forward to adopt her. This includes celebs and commoners. “We have received over 60 requests for adoption, including some celebrities. We will do a proper screening and find a loving home for her,” says Shravan.
