NCB Chennai zonal unit seizes 3 Kg Hashish bound for Sri Lanka; Woman linked to Sri Lankan Gangster arrested

CHENNAI: Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Chennai Zonal Unit arrested a couple for possession of 3 kg of Hashish intended to be trafficked to Sri Lanka. The arrested persons were identified as Sivagamisundari and her husband, Gurumurthy.

Sivagamisundari is a close associate of deceased Sri Lankan gangster and drug trafficker, Angoda Lokka, NCB stated.

According to the NCB, they received a tip off about movement of the contraband and intercepted the couple near Porur toll plaza early this week and secured the contraband from them. The value of the seized contraband is about Rs 75 lakh.

Probe revealed that Sivagamisundari had earlier been arrested by Tamil Nadu Police's CBCID in connection with a case registered in 2020 for her alleged involvement in the fabrication of

identity and other supporting documents for Angoda Lokka and facilitating his illegal stay in India.

She was among the associates arrested and investigated in connection with his activities in Tamil Nadu, an official release stated adding, "The present seizure is significant as a person with an established association with a Sri Lankan organised-crime and drug-trafficking network has now been apprehended in possession of Hashish allegedly destined for Sri Lanka.

NCB is further investigating the source of the contraband, the intended recipients and the wider network involved in its transnational trafficking.

Since the beginning of the year, NCB Chennai has seized approximately, 2,916.4 kg of Ganja, 77.7 kg of Hashish Oil, 1.8 kg of Amphetamine, 13 kg of Hashish and 2,799 LSD Blots and have arrested 48 persons. Total estimated value of the seized drugs being approximately Rs 27.80 crore.
