CHENNAI: The city police busted a seven-member gang, including five from Maharashtra, who had come to the city to distribute OG ganja and seized 7 kg of OG ganja from them.
The probe revealed that they had procured the ganja from a contact in Bengaluru who had reportedly sourced the narcotic substance from abroad.
Based on a tip-off about the movement of narcotic substances in the Seven Wells area received by the Flower Bazaar PEW (prohibition and enforcement wing), a team kept vigil near Sadayappan Street- Amman Koil Street and intercepted a duo on suspicion on Thursday (Jan 29).
The police arrested the two persons - Selva Ganapathy (30) of Sivagangai and Abdul Umarkhan (31) of Seven Wells, after it was established that they were in touch with the drug peddlers.
Based on the inputs provided by the duo, the PEW personnel conducted searches at a lodge in Periamet and rounded up the five-member gang from Maharashtra.
On searching the rooms, the police found 7 kg of OG ganja in their possession, after which the police arrested them. The arrested persons were identified as Tousif Shaji (36), Nabil Jaleel Sheik (36), Ismail Mujwar (32), Imran (29), and Chand Jaffer Sheikh (38).
The probe revealed that the accused had procured the OG ganja from their associate in Bengaluru, who sold them the stuff, claiming it was sourced from Hong Kong. Further investigations are under way to find others who are part of the network.
The arrested persons were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
