CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has questioned whether the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is monitoring buildings that are being constructed in violation of rules.
A contempt petition was filed alleging that the order issued in March 2025 to remove encroachments on the roads in George Town had not been implemented.
When the case came up for hearing earlier, the city corporation informed the court that the encroachments could not be removed due to a lack of police protection. Following this, the judges had ordered action to be taken against the police officials concerned.
When the case came up for hearing before Justices SM Subramaniam and C Kumarappan again, Additional Public Prosecutor Babu Muthu Meeran informed the court that disciplinary action had been initiated against the Inspector of Police concerned.
Accepting this, the judges closed the petition, but observed that buildings were still being constructed in violation of rules in the city and questioned whether the Corporation was monitoring such constructions. Responding to this, the counsel for the Corporation said that guidelines are in place for the same, and monitoring was being carried out.
After hearing, the judges stated that continuous monitoring is crucial because construction rule violations may amplify encroachments.
