CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has dismissed the petition seeking a permanent building for Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the activist who claimed that the station has been functioning in rented spaces.
Activist G Devarajan, a resident of the Sembium area in the city, had filed a petition before the Madras High Court stating that for the past 4 years, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar Police Station has been functioning without a permanent building and has been frequently shifted from one place to another.
In the petition, he stated that since 1980, the police station has been functioning in rented buildings without a permanent structure.
He further pointed out that despite the Tamil Nadu government allocating several crores of rupees every year to the police department, the Thiru Vi Ka Nagar Police Station continues to function from different locations, causing inconvenience to both the police personnel and the general public.
Therefore, he sought the court to direct the state government, the Director General of Police, and the city police commissioner to ensure that the Thiru Vi Ka Nagar Police Station functions from a permanent building.
The case came up for hearing before a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice MM Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan. During the hearing, counsel for the petitioner submitted that the Thiru Vi Ka Nagar Police Station does not have a permanent building and also lacks a lock-up facility to detain accused persons.
After hearing, the judges observed that the petition had been filed without any public interest and for frivolous reasons and dismissed the petition, imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the petitioner.
