IRCTC’s Friday free meals for online tickets

In order to create and promote awareness about its e-catering services, IRCTC has come up with a novel scheme of distributing free meals (standardised Indian Vegetarian meal) to 100 passengers (one meal per PNR) per week (every Friday) at the Chennai Central railway station starting from August 19.

The promotional activity which will span over a period of one month will be aimed at passengers who book tickets through IRCTC website www. irctc.co.in (e-tickets only). Passengers will be selected randomly or through a computerised draw and meals will be served at their seats by the supplier, for which IRCTC will pay the amount to the suppliers.

To facilitate rail passengers to get branded food during journey, IRCTC launched e-catering service in January, 2015. This system allows passengers to book food of their choice either from empanelled branded players from the market or from the Food Plaza in railway station through IRCTC portal www.ecatering.irctc.co.in or by downloading the mobile application ‘Food on Track’.

At present, this facility is available in more than 50 stations covering over 200 trains in Southern Railway. From an average of 10 meals per day, the site is now booking 200 orders with a minimum of 400 meals over Southern Railway. Options of ‘cash on delivery’ and ‘pre-paid’ are available. Customers can seek information from the above site which will assist in booking procedure and provide info on availability of vendors at rail stations.

Some of the major empanelled branded players are Dominos, Five Star Chicken, KR bakes, Ratna Cafe, Adyar Ananda Bhavan, KFC, Channel Food Services (Chicking), etc. Recently, IRCTC introduced Child Meals in Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore through their Food Plaza which will be expanded to other stations in the near future. To ensure good food to all, IRCTC has empanelled Kudumbashree, an SHG run by the Government of Kerala and presently rendering service in Ernakulam. The process of empanelling SHG in Tamil Nadu is underway.
