CHENNAI: Mayor R Priya on Sunday said that they are focused on interlinking storm water drains to the sea, and urged the officials to complete the linking works before September 15. The service departments and corporation officials are instructed to complete the underground works at the earliest and repair muddy roads before the onset of the northeast monsoon.

Following the inauguration of the horse chariot at Ripon Building for children aged between 5 and 12 years as part of the Madras Week celebration. While addressing the media, the mayor stated that even though the ongoing newly constructed SWDs are yet to be completed, we have instructed the officials to focus on the interlinking drains.

“Earlier, 350 linking were incomplete in Kosasthalaiyar River, where now 150 linking have been done so far. The desilting works of stormwater drains are carried out in the city,” added Priya.

In addition, the mayor has directed the service departments including Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, and Tangedco to complete the underground works carried out in the city at the earliest. Also, the muddy roads should be repaired to avoid mishaps during the monsoon season.

The Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner J Radhakrishnan said that 95 percent of storm water drain works have been completed in the core city, which was inundated during the previous monsoon season. The remaining construction work is expected to be finished at the earliest.

“Since the Kosasthalaiyar and Kovalam basin projects are long-term, as of now 56 percent of the works has been completed. We have instructed the concerned officials to ensure that the interlinking work should be done soon in the city,” added Radhakrishnan.
