MOP Vaishnav College for Women came into being due to the sustained efforts of two trusts — the Sri Vallabhacharya Vidhya Sabha and Dewan Bahadur MO Parthasarathy Aiyengar Charities. The college was started in 1992 with three courses — BCom, BBA and BSc Mathematics. Presently, the college offers 15 UG, seven PG courses and a research programme in the department of Commerce. The college is affiliated to the University of Madras and has been reaccredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an A grade. The college also has the distinction of being one of the youngest in the country to have been granted autonomy by the University Grants Commission and the University of Madras.
The college imparts valuable life skills to 3,200 students against a faculty strength of 160 teaching and training staff. It has been at the forefront in incorporating state-of-the-art infrastructure in providing students a holistic education.
The premises boast of a television station, fully equipped with film cameras, a production studio and community radio station (CRS). The radio station broadcasts programmes for 18 hours a day. MOP CRS was bestowed the National Community Radio Award 2016 by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
According to Dr Lalitha Balakrishnan, Principal, “The college strives to provide a unique teaching experience which enables students to go on to become model citizens. Our mission goals are to strive for academic excellence, development of self-reliant individuals, provide career opportunities and to create socially responsible people.”
The college places emphasis on social work by taking up novel initiatives. It adopted two government schools, providing breakfast to over 100 students studying at MOP primary school, Triplicane and Kottur government school. The initiative was funded by the students themselves.
The college is on the verge of completing 25 years and has organised a slew of events to mark the silver jubilee on July 13. The institute will launch three centres of excellence, offer certificate courses for students, sign MoUs with international institutions and organise a marathon to raise awareness on ‘educating the girl child’ on August 7 to commemorate the milestone.
The college also claims to have a one-of-a-kind MBA programme where the electives are fully handled by industry experts to provide students hands-on experience. The MA in Human Resource Management offered here has links to the industry, where students are expected to work at select institutions on Fridays and Saturdays. Its media course is also much sought-after. Every year, the Visual Communication and Electronic Media course receives close to 600 applications.
As for sports, MOP has a presence in 27 categories. Its alumni have won laurels in the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and South Asian Games. The college has won the prestigious Madras University AL Mudaliar Athletics Trophy for the last 12 years and the Sivanthi Adityan rolling trophy consecutively for the last 11 years for contributing the maximum number of players to the Madras University sports team. It was also awarded the P Haridas trophy consecutively for the last 10 years for winning the maximum number of inter-collegiate tournaments. “The best lessons in management, such as team work and performance, are learnt on the sports field,” adds Dr Balakrishnan.
Sai Samhita, an MA Communications student, won the women’s doubles tennis tournament organised by the International Tennis Federation in Egypt this year. B Hemalatha, a second year Media Management student, won the Best Senior Women’s Cricketer Award for the year 2015-2016 presented by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. Varsha Gautam won bronze in the Asian games for sailing. And Mahalakshmi won the under-18 world championship in chess in Greece.
