CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to maintain infrastructure in the Guindy and Ambattur industrial estates for 30 years.
Maintained by Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO), Guindy and Ambattur industrial estates play a key role in Chennai’s industrial growth, with numerous factories and a large workforce. However, both continue to struggle with upkeep. With poorly maintained roads, issues in garbage clearance, and a lack of proper lighting, the maintenance issues were persistent.
Now, in order to extend its civic services similar to those provided in other parts of the city, the Chennai Corporation has entered into an MoU with SIDCO to maintain infrastructure in these industrial estates.
The Ambattur Industrial Estate is spread across 1,167 acres, and the Guindy Industrial Estate is spread across 404.08 acres. Through this MoU, the Chennai Corporation will now maintain infrastructure, provide civic services and will be responsible for maintaining roads, streetlights, stormwater drains and solid waste management systems.
“We welcome this move. We have also given a few suggestions in terms of maintaining roads, curbing street vendors, among others,” stated Ravichandran G, the President of Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers’ Association (AIEMA).
