CHENNAI: To strengthen the social and economic empowerment of women in the state and enhance their participation in all sectors, the Tamil Nadu Women Employment and Safety Scheme (TNWESafe) is set to conduct ‘Global Women’s Summit’ on Tuesday and Wednesday at Nandambakkam Trade Centre.

The summit under the Department of Special Programme Implementation (SPID) along with the Department of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment (SWWED) will be held with more than 500 stakeholders from academia, UN Women, corporate social responsibility (CSR) partners, civil society organisations among others.

The summit is part of TN’s ongoing efforts to strengthen institutions that help women across all sectors access, stay in, and return to work. A higher official from SPID said, “Several initiatives are already underway by TNWESafe. However, several pockets in TN still require assistance for women to enter the workforce and become independent. The discussion for that will begin here.”

The two-day summit will feature sessions on 11 themes with over 70 speakers. “These discussions are expected to help shape State-level planning products for implementing the TNWESafe programme,” added the official. “The State-wide campaign to support women in skill development and access to formal employment will be launched tomorrow by Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin.”

TNWeSafe primarily works to improve women’s access to quality jobs in non-farm sectors including emerging sectors. It’s anchored within the SPID with priority departments like SWWED, MSME department and TN Skills Development Corporation (TNSDC).
