A GUILT-FREE HAMPER MAKES A DIFFERENCE
The Paper Dolphin, an eco-conscious and guilt-free stationery brand, has come up with a Christmas gift box that is a collection of five Chennai-based brands. “We were looking at a fuss-free gifting solution - a curation of unique, interesting, and eco-friendly gifts. This box is not similar to the usual Christmas hampers. The five brands that feature in this are Grey Matters, The Paper Dolphin, Plastic-free Madras, Everwards Zerowaste and Chokawa Bake House. The gift items include a bamboo toothbrush (this can be customised by engraving the name of the person), bamboo cotton buds, a vase which is made from concrete and glass, an eco-friendy notebook with a plantable seed pen and a seed pencil, a tote bag, a concrete key chain and a slice of plum cake,” says Urusha Maher, founder of The Paper Dolphin.
DIY GIFT BOXES FOR KIDS
The Colour Company’s Christmas dolls DIY kit is a cute gift option for children above the age of five. Aarthi Sivaramakrishnan, who curated the box, explains, “It is a typical Christmas village scene. The kit comes with templates of high-quality cardstock for Santa, reindeer with sleigh, Christmas tree and a house, a tea light to illuminate the house, butter paper to line the windows of the house for that extra effect, a sleigh bell and thread for reindeer, a tube of glue, a set of colours and instructions. The instruction manual has details like how to fold, cut, etc, and by following this children can make 3D dolls from it.” The gift box is curated for children above the age of five.
MAKE XMAS SPECIAL WITH PERSONALISED GIFTS
Varsha Kumar, a final year student at NIFT, started Paper Thundugal to make gifting very special. She started by picking up all the habits that we used to do like letter writing, sending postcards and so on. For Christmas, she has carefully curated a gift box that contains various eco-friendly products. “This box is called special edition happy packets. I have handmade a few products and have sourced some items from other local brands. The box has handcrafted Christmas tree ornaments sourced from the Porgai artisans, a personalised handwritten letter, a greeting card, three candles with pressed dry flowers, fairy lights, a bookmark with your choice of wishing words, a photo stand (in the form of a wooden log) and a small cork wish bottle,” Varsha tells DT Next.
SUSTAINABLE GIFTING IS THE KEYWORD
Oh Scrap, a Chennai-based venture that upcycles fabric scrap, has created a range of products for Christmas. “We collect fabric leftover from garment exporters and tailoring units in the city. We segregate the scraps received and based on colour and size, we select them to become new products. For the Christmas season, we have come up with sustainable festive decorations. There are hanging ornaments, tree cushions, snowman, Xmas wreath, tree garland, balls garland, and buntings. All these are handmade products from fabric scrap. You can use them to decorate the house, Xmas tree, dining table, etc. Our products will bring a Christmasy mood to the house,” explains Dominique Lopez. The team also customises goodie bags according to the need of the customer.
