CHENNAI: With the construction of the Tambaram-Guindy-Velachery Metro line to commence only after a couple of years, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has urged the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to resume construction of the Velachery flyover, halted in November.
Also, CMRL officials have confirmed that there was no integration (Metro line with the Velachery flyover) possible as Metro construction would begin much later.
“Since the Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery Metro line was overlapping with the flyover, we had asked GCC to halt the project. However, through several inspections, meetings and deliberations, we have concluded that the integration is not possible,”said a CMRL official. “GCC’s Velachery flyover project is in an advanced stage, and we’re only on the verge of completing DPR. Hence, holding the GCC’s project is non-feasible. When CMRL begins Metro construction at the stretch, we’ll take necessary measures during land acquisition and demolition.”
The GCC project is a three-lane flyover for 3 km that begins 300 metres after the junction of Sardar Patel Road and Velachery Main Road and ends at Velachery Bypass. The construction in November was halted as the Metro alignment intersected 650 metres (20 flyover pillars) on the 200-feet Radial Road near Guru Nanak College junction and extending up to the Five Furlong Road junction.
