Mohammed Basheer of Bengaluru, who was sleeping at the Marina beach near Kannagi statue, was attacked with wooden logs by two men who escaped with his mobile phone and cash. A few metres away, the two men along with two others, attacked S Anbarasan (48) of Thanjavur and robbed his two mobile phones and cash.
The victims lodged a complaint at Marina police station and went to the hospital for the treatment. Meanwhile, a patrol team comprising head constable Selvakumar and Armed Reserve wing personnel S Soundaraj, A Solairajan and K Nishanth Kumar stopped an autorickshaw near the Gandhi statue. The four men in the vehicle gave contradictory replies to the queries, which led to further suspicions. Soon, investigation revealed that they were behind both the assaults.
They were identified as M Ilavarasan (28) of Korukkupet, T David (19) of Old Washermenpet, auto driver S Khader (22) of Washermenpet and S Surya (24) of Mint. The three stolen mobile phones and Rs 1,500 in cash were recovered from the gang, along with a knife and 30 gram ganja. The autorickshaw was also seized, before they were remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, police Commissioner AK Viswanathan rewarded the patrol team for nabbing the robbery gang within hours.
