CHENNAI: City Police arrested five persons for possession of methamphetamine near Ayanavaram. About 37 grams of meth and 56 syringes were seized from them. Police said that the accused sourced the meth from Bengaluru.
The ANIU (anti-narcotics intelligence unit) of the city police had received a tip-off about the movement of synthetic drugs in Ayanavaram police station limits, after which the ANIU personnel coordinated with the local police and kept vigil at the housing board playground.
On noticing a gang loitering suspiciously, a police team rounded them up for questioning, and since they gave evasive replies, the police checked their belongings and found the synthetic drugs in their possession.
The arrested persons were identified as Ibrahim (26), Akbar Ali (36), Babuji (36), Shahul Hameed (26) and Noel (27). Probe revealed that they sourced the methamphetamine from Bengaluru to sell here.
Further investigations are underway to find others who are part of their network. The arrested persons were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
In a similar incident, City Police had busted a seven-member gang, including five from Maharashtra, who had come to the city to distribute OG ganja. Police seized 7 kg of OG ganja from them. Probe revealed that they had procured the ganja from a contact in Bengaluru who had reportedly sourced the narcotic substance from abroad.
