TIRUVALLUR: Tension prevailed at the Collectorate in Tiruvallur on Tuesday when a 47-year-old farmer staged a hunger strike demanding action against a gang that had encroached and grabbed a land belonging to him.

He claimed that despite repeated complaints to the authorities no action was taken so far on the land grabbers. The complainant Balakrishnan, a resident of Mayilar Vada village in RK Pettai owned a piece of land in the same neighborhood. However, a gang of nine miscreants reportedly prepared fake documents and claimed ownership to the land without his knowledge.

On realising this, Balakrishnan said he lodged multiple complaints with a police team dealing with land grabbing cases, the local Tahsildar, RDO and several others to no avail. “Frustrated by this, he staged a hunger strike in front of the Collectorate and set up a board airing his concerns while he stuck the original land documents on a nearby wall for the public to see,” police said.

He requested Collector Dr Alby John to take action against those who cheated him and refused to leave the premises otherwise. On information, Tiruvallur Town police rushed to the Collectorate and asked Balakrishnan to leave after they promised swift action on his petition.
