Dhanapal and Jayaraman, who were announced as the candidates for the post of Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively by AIADMK Supremo and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, filed their nomination papers before Assembly Secretary AMP Jamaludeen.

They were accompanied by ministers of the Jayalalithaa government. Both of them had served as Speaker and Deputy Speaker during the 2011-16 AIADMK regime, which broke the 32-year-old political tradition and became the first party to retain power by winning the elections for a second successive term.

While Dhanapal was re-elected to the Assembly from Avinashi (Reserved) constituency, Jayaraman was re-elected as MLA from the Pollachi seat. Since no one else has filed nomination papers, both Dhanapal and Jayaraman will be declared elected unopposed when the 15th Assembly session, which had commenced on May 25 with Pro-tem Speaker S Semmalai administering the oath to the newly elected MLAs, resume on Friday for the Speaker’s election.

Once they were declared elected unopposed by the Pro-tem Speaker, Leader of the House O Panneerselvam and the Leader of the Opposition MK Stalin would guide the Speaker to his seat as per the Assembly tradition.
