These boats will be inducted into Indian Coast Guard in August this year, after completion of extensive trials on fitted equipment and machineries. Post induction, these boats will be based in Karaikal and Kakinada.

The newly launched boats are part of the 36 IBs (Interceptor Boat) project contract which was signed between the Ministry of Defence and L&T shipyard on March 19, 2010. Out of these 36 Boats, 24 have been delivered by  L&T shipyard Hazira (Surat) and eight boats by  L&T shipyard, Kattupalli.

The interceptor boats would be utilised for day and night coastal patrol and surveillance,  anti-terrorist, anti-smuggling operations and coastal security. The boats are equipped with ultra-modern technology including sophisticated navigational and latest communication system and are capable of operating in tropical conditions with expected life span of over 15 years. The endurance of these IBs is 20 hours. Each IB would be manned by a 12-member crew, including one officer and two subordinate officers.

Begum Sahiba Sayeeda Abdul Ali launched the two boats while Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, Prince of Arcot was the Chief Guest.
