City records 92 per cent recovery rate

In a positive sign for the city, which is battling COVID-19 pandemic, the number of recovered patients has crossed 1.50 lakh on Monday. As per data from the Greater Chennai Corporation, only seven per cent of the total infected persons are now under treatment.

 According to the Corporation, of the total 1,63,423 positive cases reported in the city as on Sunday, 1,49,601 persons have recovered and been sent home – a recovery rate of 92 per cent. So far, 3,166 persons died due to the pandemic, which puts mortality rate at 1.94 per cent. The remaining 10,656 persons are under treatment.

 The data that the Corporation on Monday morning showed that Tondiarpet, Royapuram and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zones, which were worst-hit during the initial days of the pandemic, have recorded more than 90 per cent recovery rate – 93, 92 and 90 per cent respectively. Among the 15 Corporation zones, only Perungudi and Alandur zones have less than 90 per cent recovery rate. The recovery rate at these two extended zones in the south region is 89 per cent.

 In terms of number of persons recovered, Kodambakkam zone has the highest number of recovered persons, with 16,821 recoveries. Also, Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Ambattur, and Anna Nagar have more than 10,000 recovered patients.

 Meanwhile, the number of new cases being reported in the city every day has crossed 1,000 again. Corporation officials said that increased movement and intensified tests in the city has contributed to the increase of new cases in the recent days. “We are testing more than 12,000 samples per day but the positivity rate is still less than 10 per cent,” an official said.
