CHENNAI: The restored Tholkappia Poonga (Ecological Park), reopened to the public on October 24, 2025, is set to increase visitor access from February 1, 2026, following its successful environmental rehabilitation. The decision comes from the Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT) and the City Municipal Administration.

Currently, to protect the sensitive ecosystem as per a High Court-monitored committee's guidelines, visitor numbers are strictly capped at 250 per session. However, due to high demand, the cap for walking sessions will be raised from 500 to 3000 individuals daily starting next month. The park, now a thriving urban wetland biodiversity hotspot, has seen a remarkable increase in species from 141 in 2011 to 549 post-restoration.

Current & New Timings:

  • Public Walking: 6:30 am - 8:00 am and 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm daily.

  • Student groups (for environmental education): 9:30 am - 12:30 am, Monday to Sunday (except Thursday and public holidays).

  • Guided public tours: 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm, Monday to Sunday (except Thursday and public holidays). This session remains open to all without restriction.

Since reopening, over 6,800 students and 20,200 general visitors have enjoyed the park, excluding regular walkers.

Revised Fee Structure:

To accommodate more citizens, walking membership fees have been substantially reduced:

  • One month: Reduced from Rs. 500 to Rs. 250

  • Three months: Reduced from Rs. 1500 to Rs. 750

  • Six months: Reduced from Rs. 2500 to Rs. 1250

  • One year: Reduced from Rs. 5000 to Rs. 2500

A new three-colour card system will be introduced, allowing members to walk up to three times per week. Only 300 visitors will be allowed inside per session at any given time.

All visitors are advised to check for online ticket reservations and updates at www.crrt.tn.gov.in.
