CHENNAI: A second-year college student suffered grievous injuries after her stalker pushed her from the first-floor terrace of her residence in Nerkundram on Sunday night because the student firmly rejected his proposal for a relationship.

The police said that the accused was in an inebriated state, and he was caught by the neighbours and treated to mob justice before he was handed over to the police.

The victim, B Sharmila (20), has suffered injuries to her spinal cord and hip, the police said. Sharmila is a second-year BCom student at a private college in Avadi and resides with her family in Nerkundram.

The police investigations revealed that Sharmila had informed her family members three months ago about the stalker who had been harassing her to accept his proposal.

On Sunday night, Sharmila was on the terrace of her house, securing clothes that were put out to dry, when the incident happened. The accused, who was watching her from the street, gained access to the terrace through the neighbour's house and then pushed her down, taking her by surprise.

On hearing the screams, neighbours intervened and apprehended the man, who was in an intoxicated state.

The public handed over the man to the Koyambedu police, who booked him under several sections, including attempted murder and arrested him. The arrested person was identified as Silambarasan (27), a native of Ariyalur district.

The probe revealed that Silambarsan, who was working as a loadman, used to be the victim's neighbour five years ago. After the girl's family shifted to a new place, he found her and has been harassing her, police said. The accused was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
