CHENNAI: A man in Royapettah was booked for killing a pup hours after its birth. Investigation revealed the man, Rajesh, was irate as a stray dog gave birth to pups in his compound.
Rajesh had repeatedly assaulted one of the pups, leading to its death. Neighbours immediately alerted the police on witnessing the act. Rajesh also allegedly threatened the women who questioned his act, police sources said.
In a similar incident in Perungalathur two days ago, animal activists approached the Peerkankaranai police station with a complaint alleging that miscreants have poisoned and killed at least eight stray dogs.
The complainants were a couple who had earlier resided in Nedunkundram Devaraja Nagar near Perungalathur and had recently shifted to Tiruchy after living in the neighbourhood for about three years. They came to Nedunkundram on Sunday to check on the stray dogs and found that one of them was lying dead. On looking for the other dogs, they found about half a dozen dogs lying dead in the burial ground. In their complaint to the police, the couple named two residents in their erstwhile neighbourhood, whom they suspect of having poisoned the dogs.
