CHENNAI: City roads from New Year’s Eve on Wednesday until Thursday morning recorded zero fatal accidents, thanks to the precautionary measures put in place by the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP). The unexpected downpour also helped the police’s cause as it kept speed maniacs off the roads.

Thousands of revellers thronged various locations in the city, including the usual hotspots like Marina and Elliots beaches and the Kathipara Urban square.

“As many as 400 officers and 1,600 traffic police personnel were deployed and dedicated arrangements were made to prevent accidents, regulate free flow of traffic, enhance road safety awareness and control traffic violations such as driving under the influence of alcohol, over speeding, rash and dangerous driving,” an official statement from Chennai police stated.

Motorists who were involved in traffic violations were educated on the dangers of breaking traffic laws and given appropriate advice by policemen patrolling the roads and at checkpoints.
