Chennai: Guest worker held for trans woman's murder

CHENNAI: Police have arrested a 20-year-old guest worker from Assam in connection with the murder of a transgender person who was found dead inside a makeshift tenement off the Vanagaram service road on Saturday.

The arrested person was identified as Dhurjan (22), who was working as a loadman at a godown. The accused told the police that he assaulted the transgender person with a wooden log after she allegedly took Rs 2,500 from him forcibly.

The deceased was identified as Pandi alias Shilpa (36) of Chettiyar Agaram near Maduravoyal. Probe revealed that the deceased used to solicit and frequent the Vanagaram service road often. Police said that she was on the service road on Friday night, too.

On Saturday morning, locals found Shilpa lying in a pool of blood in the makeshift tent and alerted the police. Police moved her to a hospital where she was declared as brought dead after which her body was shifted to the Government Kilpauk Medical College hospital for post mortem.

After enquiries, the police zeroed in on the suspect and arrested him. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
