CHENNAI: A government hospital nurse, who allegedly mixed sedatives in his colleague’s soup and stole her gold chain after she fell unconscious, was arrested by the Saidapet police. The suspect was accused in a similar case of drugging and stealing from a colleague, and had come out on bail only last week.
The accused, identified as Nancy Nisha (37) of Todhunter Nagar, and the victim, Sunitha (31) of Adambakkam, work at the Government Children's Hospital in Egmore.
According to the police, the incident happened on October 10, 2025. Nisha allegedly insisted that Sunitha, who was stressed due to family circumstances, come home with her to Saidapet.
There, Nisha fed her mushroom soup, after which Sunitha fell unconscious. When she woke up around 7 pm, Nisha claimed she had to leave urgently and dropped off Sunitha at Saidapet railway station on a two-wheeler.
It was only after reaching home that Sunitha realised her gold chain, weighing approximately six sovereigns, was missing. She filed a complaint at the Saidapet police station.
The police claimed Nisha allegedly mixed a sedative into the soup. After arresting her on January 12, police found that she had melted the stolen chain into a gold bar and pledged it at a pawn shop in Vyasarpadi, from where it was recovered.
Further investigation revealed a similar case against Nisha. On November 15, 2025, she allegedly drugged another colleague, Thangammal, with a sedative-laced juice at the same hospital. After Thangammal became unconscious, Nisha allegedly pretended to take her home safely in an auto-rickshaw and stole her thali chain weighing approximately 4.75 sovereigns during the journey. Nisha was arrested in that case and was released on bail just last week.
Nisha was produced before a court on Monday. She has been remanded to judicial custody.
