CHENNAI: Gold prices surged to yet another all-time high on the afternoon of January 21 (Wednesday). The yellow metal rose by Rs 1,320 to enter the Rs 1.15 lakh bracket. Gold is now priced at Rs 1,15,320 per sovereign (8 grams) and Rs 14,415 per gram, marking an increase of Rs 165.
In the morning session, gold was priced at Rs 1,14,000 per sovereign and Rs 14,250 per gram. Overall, it rose by Rs 4,120 per sovereign across a single day.
A day earlier, 22-carat gold was priced at Rs 1,11,200 per sovereign, and Rs 13,900 per gram.
Gold remains significantly higher compared to last year. Prices have surged from Rs 59,600 per sovereign (Rs 7,450 per gram) on January 21, 2025, to Rs 1,15,320 per sovereign (Rs 14,415 per gram) on January 21, 2026, marking an increase of Rs 55,720, or about 93.4%.
Meanwhile, silver prices increased by Rs 5 to sell for a record Rs 345 per gram (Rs 3,45,000 per kg) on January 21 afternoon. A gram had cost Rs 340 per gram in the morning session.
After a record 2025 rally, the strongest for gold since 1979, geopolitical tensions from Venezuela to Iran and Greenland and fading hopes of a quick end to the Russia-Ukraine war have lifted demand for both precious metals. Questions over Fed independence have added to market uncertainty after the Trump administration launched a criminal investigation against Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell, prompting central bank chiefs worldwide to voice support for him.
Market focus now shifts to the US Federal Reserve's January 27-28 meeting, where rates are expected to remain unchanged.
