CHENNAI: Greater Chennai Police's cybercrime wing recovered Rs 25.97 crore lost to cyber fraudsters in 2025. Swift intervention, coordination with banks, and court-backed procedures enabled the police to reverse fraudulent transactions and credit the money back to victims' accounts, the police said.
In December 2025, the police recovered Rs 1.04 crore and returned it to the victims. According to the police, the cybercrime division received 192 complaints in December through the emergency helpline number 1930 and direct walk-ins, and took action in 88 of these complaints.
Officers acted under the supervision of Zonal Joint Commissioners and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) to track fraudulent transactions, freeze the bank accounts of suspects, and retrieve stolen funds through legal procedures.
According to the Chennai police, in December, the cyber crime wing team at the city police headquarters restituted Rs 47.42 lakh in 36 cases, followed by the South zone cyber crime unit, which recovered Rs 19.81 lakhs in 18 cases.
West zone cyber crime unit recovered Rs 5.47 lakh in five cases, North zone cyber crime unit recovered Rs 19.04 lakh in 15 cases and East Zone cyber crime unit recovered Rs 13.12 lakh in 14 cases.
