Chennai: Crane accident claims life of young biker at Metro Rail work site

The Maduravayal Traffic Investigation Wing has registered a case and arrested the crane driver.

CHENNAI: A 25-year-old man was killed on the spot after his motorcycle collided with a reversing hydraulic mobile crane on Arcot Road in Valasaravakkam on Thursday night at CMRL work site. The Maduravayal Traffic Investigation Wing has registered a case and arrested the crane driver.

The victim has been identified as S. Mukesh Kumar (25), son of Saravanan, a resident of Choolaimedu. According to the police, the accident occurred at approximately 10:50 on Thursday near the Jai Garden area, close to Metro Rail pillar no. 203.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Mukesh Kumar was riding his Royal Enfield motorcycle (TN 10 BU 7048) from west to east on Arcot Road. Simultaneously, a hydraulic mobile crane (TN 18 BZ 7624), reportedly engaged in work for Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), was travelling in the same direction.

He was declared dead at the scene. His body was later sent to KMC Hospital for post-mortem.

Based on a complaint filed by the victim's father, Saravanan (56), the police registered a case under sections 281 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106 (Causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The crane driver, Saini, has been taken into custody.
