CHENNAI: Uncontrolled dumping of garbage in Chennai’s busy MGR Nagar Market has triggered foul smell and sanitation concerns, forcing traders and shoppers to demand immediate intervention from the Greater Chennai Corporation.

MGR Nagar market, one of the most important commercial hubs in South Chennai, is facing a serious hygiene crisis due to indiscriminate dumping of waste in and around the market area.

The accumulation of garbage has resulted in an unbearable stench, creating health risks for merchants, customers, and nearby residents.

The market serves as a key shopping destination for residents of Ashok Nagar, Nesapakkam, and KK Nagar. Thousands of people visit the market daily to purchase vegetables, meat, fish, clothing, and household items.

However, in certain sections of the market, heaps of garbage dumped in open spaces have become a growing concern.

Traders allege that waste is not only dumped in the market premises but is also being thrown into a nearby canal, worsening sanitation conditions. The canal eventually connects to the Adyar river, raising fears of environmental damage and water pollution.

Nagarajan, a merchant at MGR Nagar market, told DT Next that traders are facing serious health issues due to the foul smell caused by open garbage dumping.

“Our business is badly affected. Chicken and fish waste are often dumped here, attracting flies and creating an unhygienic environment,” he said.

Echoing similar concerns, Ranjan, a regular customer, urged the Chennai Corporation to install large dustbins and ensure regular waste clearance. Traders and residents have demanded immediate action to restore cleanliness and protect public health.
