CHENNAI: Motorists and commuters using the Velachery-Tambaram and Mambakkam main roads to reach Narayanapuram, Medavakkam, Gowrivakkam, Nesavalar Nagar, and surrounding areas are facing hardships every day.

The damaged state of the road at the intersection of Mambakkam Main Road below the Medavakkam flyover has reportedly gone unnoticed by the State Highways Department officials for over two months.

According to Medavakkam residents and regular motorists, heavy traffic, including water tankers and other large vehicles, has worn out the bituminous surface at the junction beneath the Medavakkam flyover at the Mambakkam-Medavakkam intersection.

Consequently, this specific spot now witnesses at least three accidents per week. Posing a high risk for safety hazards for motorists.

R Kalavathi, who runs a fruit shop near the Perumal Koil Arch in Medavakkam, said, “For the past few months, motorists have been suffering due to the worsening road conditions. Constant water spills from private tanker lorries have further deteriorated the bitumen at the junction. The road needs to be re-laid immediately to ensure the safety of commuters.”

Another resident, speaking on the condition of anonymity, added, “Since there are vegetable and fruit markets located under the flyover, cattle owners often allow their animals to roam freely on the road. This further increases the risk of accidents for passing vehicles.”

When contacted, an official from the State Highways Department stated, “A water leakage from the Metrowater pipe occurred at a nearby stretch, but those issues have since been rectified. The damaged road surface will be addressed within the next couple of days.”
