CHENNAI: Construction work on the long-pending redevelopment of the Broadway bus terminus will begin from January 25, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments and CMDA chairman PK Sekarbabu said on Sunday, after inspecting various civic projects being taken up under the North Chennai Development Plan.
The foundation stone for the Broadway bus terminus and the integrated multi-modal transport hub will be laid by Chief Minister MK Stalin, the Minister said.
As interim arrangements, the temporary bus stand at Royapuram can park 55 buses and handle around 2,000 bus movements a day, while a second terminal at Island Grounds can accommodate 34 buses at a time and is expected to see similar commuter volumes.
Both facilities are being provided with standard bus terminus amenities, including seating for persons with disabilities and breastfeeding rooms.
The Minister also reviewed ongoing construction work at the new exhibition centre being developed at the Island Grounds by the CMDA.
The facility is planned as a modern exhibition and event space to host large-scale public exhibitions and events.
Other projects reviewed included ongoing restoration works at Villivakkam lake, construction of a new community hall at SIDCO Nagar at a cost of Rs 6.75 crore, and two Urban Primary Health Centres under construction at Sembium and on Somayya Raja street, costing Rs 4.82 crore and Rs 4.19 crore respectively.
