CHENNAI: Three police constables attached to the Nungambakkam police station were suspended for extorting Rs 15,000 from a complainant.
The victim, a staff member at a star hotel in the city, was robbed by a group of transpersons when returning home after work last week, police said. They made him transfer Rs 5,000 through digital payment.
The victim approached a police patrol vehicle and informed the personnel about the incident. After questioning the man, they threatened to book a false case against him and demanded a bribe. They took him to an ATM and made him withdraw Rs 15,000 to pay them.
After returning to his room, the victim informed his roommates, who advised him to approach senior police officers. A complaint was filed with the Triplicane Deputy Commissioner of Police. Based on a preliminary enquiry, it was found that the three constables identified as Rathnam, Vignesh, and Khaja Moideen attached to the Nungambakkam law-and-order police station collected a bribe from the complainant for not registering a false case.
The three constables were placed under suspension pending further departmental enquiry.
