CHENNAI: Motorists have been facing difficulties for the past two weeks as a portion of Velachery Main Road, near the TNPDCL Substation office, was dug up for laying a high-tension (HT) cable, and not been properly restored.

Though the work has been completed, only stones have been placed over the excavated portion, leaving the stretch uneven.

With vehicles continuing to use the busy road, the uneven surface and pothole-like portions are causing inconvenience to motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders. Motorists are forced to slow down while crossing the stretch as vehicles shake when passing over the uneven portion.

Residents said the damaged stretch posed a safety risk for both pedestrians and motorists. A resident, Sanjay, said, “The uneven portion is very difficult to cross. In particular, two-wheeler riders struggle as vehicles become unstable while passing over the pothole. Children and elderly people also face difficulty while crossing this stretch. Minor accidents have been occurring occasionally.”

Concurring with him was auto driver Sarath, who added: “At night, there is a risk of accidents as motorists may not notice the uneven portion and fall into it. A ‘Go Slow’ warning board should be placed near the stretch for the safety of motorists, especially those unfamiliar with the road.” A senior TNPDCL official told

DT Next that the cable-laying work was completed and stones were temporarily placed over the excavated portion. “The road will be restored and concrete laid over the stretch soon,” he said.
