CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin made a strong appeal to the youth to cultivate the habit of reading for at least one hour every day.
He was speaking at the opening of the 49th Chennai Book Fair at the YMCA Grounds in Nandanam on Thursday.
“I urge youngsters to develop the habit of reading daily. Spend your time on books. As you read, your thoughts will grow; develop the habit of transforming those thoughts into written words,” Stalin said in his inaugural address.
The chief minister emphasised that books are the “ultimate intellectual weapon” for personal and state prosperity.
Calling for a cultural upgrade, the CM noted, “In many countries, it is common to see people reading in parks and during travel. We must foster that same culture here. The progress of our nation is directly tied to the growth of your ideas.”
The chief minister also encouraged families to visit the fair. “I invite everyone, especially from Chennai and neighbouring districts, to bring your children on holidays and introduce them to the world of literature. Book fairs belong to everyone,” he stated, reiterating his government's commitment to promoting reading and supporting literature that advances society.
Started in 1977 with just 13 stalls, the Chennai Book Fair, organised by the Book Sellers and Publishers Association of South India, today has grown to feature approximately 900 stalls. The entry to the fair is free.
