

CHENNAI: With the objective of transforming North Chennai into a recreational hub, Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply KN Nehru on Tuesday inaugurated a series of development projects costing Rs 39.78 crore.
The key highlights were the introduction of boating facilities at Madhavaram and Manali lakes, the first such initiative undertaken by the Greater Chennai Corporation. Both lakes have been developed as community spaces with lighting facilities for evening use and scientific measures to prevent erosion.
The Minister inaugurated the facilities, beginning with Madhavaram Lake, which was restored at a cost of Rs 15.03 crore under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. The restoration has increased the water holding capacity from 4.57 lakh cubic metres to over 5.77 lakh cubic metres. Following desilting, footpaths, landscaped walkways, a children’s play area and a food court were added.
To promote water-based recreation, TN Tourism Development Corporation has introduced 18 boats, including jet skis and motorboats, at an additional cost of Rs 1.27 crore.
Manali lake was also inaugurated after renovation works worth Rs 10.41 crore. Spread over 29 acres, the lake now has strengthened bunds, perimeter walls and 15 new boats.
Additionally, Minister Nehru also inaugurated an Animal Birth Control centre at Satthangadu village in Tiruvottiyur. Built at a cost of Rs 1.82 crore, the facility is equipped to perform surgeries, administer anti-rabies vaccinations and carry out microchipping of stray dogs, with a mandatory observation period of five to six days before release.
Foundation stones were also laid for two infrastructure projects. The first is for the Manali bus stand to be constructed at a cost of Rs 4.75 crore on Manali School Street, with facilities including a nursing room, a police outpost and parking space for 48 two-wheelers. The second is the Manali New Town community hall. To be built at a cost of Rs 7.50 crore on 80 Feet Road, it’s a three-storey structure designed for public functions with dedicated dining and meeting halls.
