Bhogi smoke, fog hit services at Chennai airport; 14 flights cancelled; 30 delayed

Airport sources said that more flights could be delayed or cancelled depending on visibility conditions, and passengers have been advised to check with their respective airlines before heading to the airport.

CHENNAI: The flight operations at Chennai Airport were disrupted on Wednesday due to dense smog and fog caused by the Bhogi festival celebrations.

While eight arrival and departure flights had already been announced as cancelled earlier in the day, six more flights were called off, taking the total number of cancellations to fourteen.

The newly cancelled services included three departures to Kochi, Bengaluru and Mumbai, and three arrivals from the same cities.

Due to low visibility in the morning, twenty flights were delayed. The flight, which arrived from Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Colombo, Pune and Kolkata, and departure flights to destinations such as Andaman, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Coimbatore, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Pune and Siliguri.

Most of these flights were delayed by more than three hours, pushing the total number of delayed services to thirty.

With fourteen cancellations and thirty delays, a total of 44 flight services were affected at Chennai airport due to Bhogi-related smoke and early-morning fog.

The cancellations have increased compared to the Bhogi festival the previous year, during which 30 flight services were impacted.
